DJ Maphorisa denied assault charge to be dropped

by Johana Mukandila

DJ Maphorisa’s attempts to have the assault accusation against him withdrawn has been rejected by the chief prosecutor.

The South African DJ and record producer whose real name is Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, appeared at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 12 July, Sunday World reports.

His case was again postponed and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions. On July 26, the Izolo hitmaker is set to be back in court.

The South African reported that the chief prosecutor rejected Maphorisa‘s representations, said Phindi Mjonondwane, a spokesperson for the Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

“He is exercising his right to follow the next step, which is to submit representations to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions,” said  Phindi who told The South African.

Thuli Phongolo, a former Generations: The Legacy actor, was allegedly assaulted and strangled by Maphorisa following a dispute at her Sandton, Johannesburg, home in May. Maphorisa was given R4 000 bail by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court.

In a police statement, the actress said that Maphorisa attacked her and hit her in the chest. He also allegedly hit her in the face.

“He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” the police statement read.

It has also been reported that Thuli had reportedly withdrawn her statement. The couple proceeded to release a joint statement, saying they want to deal with the matter privately.

However, news recently surfaced that the DJ has reportedly repossessed the cars he bought for his girlfriend Thuli Phongolo after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting her in May this year – a source has told ZiMoja.
