The side effects of high caffeine consumption

Regarded as healthy beverages, most coffees and teas contain caffeine, a substance that may boost your mood, metabolism, and mental and physical performance. However, an increased intake of caffeine may lead to certain side effects.

Below are the following side effects listed by Healthline.

Anxiety

Although low-to-moderate doses of caffeine can increase alertness,  when consumed in larger amounts, it may lead to anxiety or edginess. Therefore, it is best to monitor your own response so that you are able to determine how much caffeine you can tolerate.

Increased urination

This is a common side effect of high caffeine consumption. It may also increase the likelihood of developing incontinence in people with healthy bladders.

Fatigue

Although caffeinated beverages are known to boost energy levels, they can also have the opposite effect by leading to rebound fatigue after the caffeine leaves your system. To avoid feeling lethargic, consume caffeine in moderate rather than high doses.

Digestive issues

Most people will find that a morning cup of coffee aids in their bowel movement. Though this is the case, it is not surprising that large doses of caffeine may lead to loose stools, diarrhoea or orsen gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in some people.

Addiction

An increased intake of caffeine may lead to addiction. Though it does not cause classic addiction the way these drugs do, caffeine may, however, lead to psychological or physical dependency, especially at high dosages.

High blood pressure

Caffeine does not seem to increase the risk of heart disease or stroke in most people. However, according to several studies, it can raise blood pressure levels due to its stimulatory effect on the nervous system. Due to the elevated blood pressure, this then becomes a risk factor for heart attacks and strokes, as it may damage arteries over time, and restrict the blood flow to your heart and brain.
