Shaka iLembe to be released in June

by Ncumisa Lerato Kunana

A date has been set for the release of the highly anticipated Shaka iLembe historical drama series. It will premier on Mzansi Magic channel 161 on Sunday, June 18th at 20:00.

The renowned Zulu king’s life tale is told over the course of the 12-part series in multiple incarnations, from his early years through adulthood. According to News24, before filming began, historians, academics, and family members—including the late King Goodwill Zwelithini and Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi—convened for consultations to assist in the correct potrayal on the late King and Nguni culture.

“Shaka iLembe represents the best of African storytelling,” DStv media sales CEO Fahmeeda Cassim-Surtee said in a press statement. “It was created for a local market, but it is also, most certainly, a global television property.”

“While the series is an entertainment title and a fictional interpretation of historical events, producers Bomb Productions have taken care to ensure that Nguni culture is authentically portrayed and respected,” the statement continued. “Fittingly, Shaka iLembe was filmed in 4K with state-of-the-art visual effects ensuring the best screen treatment for the sweeping dynastic saga that encompasses the Zulu, Elangeni, Hlubi, Mthethwa and Ndwandwe clans.”

Oscar-nominated director Angus Gibson, executive producers Nomzamo Mbatha, Nhlanhla Mtaka, and Desireé Markgraaff, along with Professor Hlonipha Mokoena, a cultural and historical expert, lead the creative team. This is Nomzamo’s debut as a producer and we love to see her spread her wings.

The cast includes some of seasoned favourite actors and some of our budding talent and we love to see the two come together. Nomzamo Mbatha, Lemogang Tsipa, Senzo Radebe, Thembinkosi Mthembu, Wiseman Mncube, Khabonina Qubeka, Dawn Thandeka King, Hope Mbhele, Mondli Makhoba, Sthandiwe Kgoroge and will introduce Ntando Zondi.

Abdul Khoza, Ziya Xulu, Calvin Ratladi, Phumlani Mndebele, Don Mlangeni, Vusi Kunene, Mduduzi Mabaso, Sibonelo Ngubane, Ayanda Borotho and Wanda Zuma star in the drama as well.
