Deep-seated cultural notions of what constitutes beautiful skin are often the driving force behind the demand for bleaching products and self esteem.

One lady who used to bleach her skin many years ago went viral on Tik-Tok.

In the video posted by @dengajith91 the woman is being questioned by her daughter who saw her old pictures and noticed how fair her skin was.

The child saw her mum’s wedding pictures and asked her why she bleached.

“Mummy why did you bleach yourself we can’t recognise you?” she asked her mother

The little girl continued by saying:

“Why did you not love yourself? I love your black skin, why did you bleach yourself for what?” she asked her mother yet again.

Her mother responded by saying by apologising to her daughter for her action.

“OH I am so sorry baby! I little bit dump. I did not know what I was doing. I thought that bleaching my skin was the best thing I could ever done,”she said while responding to her daughter’s question.

The lady said that she abandoned the practice along the line and returned to her normal skin colour. She also said how she regretted bleaching her skin and advised all women to shun bleaching. The video showed what she looked like in the past when she was still using bleaching cream. She looked fair in the old picture. However, she has returned to her normal skin colour.

The video has sparked reactions among TikTok users who have seen it.

Here is what peeps had to say:

“Your luck your color came back and you did’nt get cancer. Some people are so lucky. I am happy you love the beautiful pigmentation now,” wrote one user.

Another said: “So much more beautiful. Melanin is rich.”

“So happy your colour came back, beautiful,” wrote another user.

@dengajith91I regret it please do not bleach your skin thank you.♬ original sound – Aj jopdheng
