5 minutes with news anchor Lindi Sirame

by Fundiswa Nkwanyana
Lindi Sirame

Newzroom Afrika news anchor Lindi Sirame will now also be on the drive time slot with Siphesihle ‘DJ Sphectacula’ Ngwenya and Lebogang ‘DJ Naves’ Naves. She chats to our Fundiswa Nkwanyana about her career path.

My love for news comes from watching current affairs programmes with my grandmother. She would make me watch the news back to back on a daily basis. If I didn’t understand the language of that particular bulletin, I would watch the visuals to make sense of what was happening. As I grew older, I fell in love with storytelling and the presentation of news. I decided to turn this passion into a career.

I started working in radio while studying towards a BA degree in journalism, at the University of Johannesburg. I worked at UJFM as a news anchor, and in my third year I interned at BBC Africa. After that I joined the Y-academy for a six months internship. I worked hard and two months into my internship, I started reading weekend news on YFM. Afterwards, I was hired as the breakfast news anchor. I’m now working at Newzroom Afrika and joining Metro FM.

I was ecstatic when I received the call that I got a job on Metro FM. I’ve wanted to work for the station for a while, and hearing that it’s finally happening made me happy. I can’t wait to make my mark. People must tune in to find out what I have in store for them.

My advice for people who want to follow in my footsteps is to work hard. Don’t be afraid of the challenge. Chances are, when you are still building, you’ll work for free and the hours will be long. But, set goals and don’t rest until you’ve achieved them.

Catch Lindi on Metro FM’s Drive time show, The Kings Suite, which airs on weekdays from 3 to 6pm.
