It’s never too late to make your own bread at home. You can even rope in your little ones to get in on the fun. Try these 3 easy bread recipes. By Ntwenhle Gcabashe

Parmesan cheese bread

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cooking time: 60 minutes

Serves: 8

  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 5 cups cake flour
  • 3 tablespoons castor sugar
  • pinch salt
  • 1 sachet instant yeast
  • 1 cup sweetcorn, canned and drained
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water

Method

  1. Mix cheese, flour, sugar, salt, yeast and sweetcorn.
  2. Add water. Mix well to form smooth dough. Knead for 10-15 minutes. Cover with kitchen cloth and let double size.
  3. Knead for 10-15 minutes and place into lightly greased enamel bowl.
  4. Half fill water in a saucepan, place the bowl inside. Cover with a lid and cook for 60 minutes or until cooked through.
  5. Serve warm.

Microwave steam bread

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes

Serves: 8

  • 4 cups self-raising flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup bacon, cooked and chopped
  • 1 cup carrot, grated
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water
  • Fresh thyme, for serving

Method

  1. In a bowl mix flour, sugar, bacon, carrot, butter and water. Mix well and spoon into a microwave container.
  2. Cook into a microwave for 15 minutes or until cooked.
  3. Serve with fresh thyme.

Honey and sesame bread

Prep time: 60 minutes

Cooking time: 60 minutes

Serves: 8-10

  • 1 cup (250ml) honey
  • 1/2 cup sesame seeds
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • pinch salt
  • 1 sachet instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 egg

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180C.
  2. Sift flour. Add salt and yeast.
  3. Add water, honey and butter. Mix well and knead for 15-20 minutes. Cover with kitchen cloth. Let is double size. Divide the dough into three. Neatly plait to create pattern. Brush with egg. and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  4. Bake for 60 minutes or until cooked.
  5. Serve warm.
