Lupita shared that she hoped little girls like Sulwe would learn to love themselves. She said in part: “My hope for Sulwe is that little girls like her and boys may know that they have the answer within them. One of the things I wanted for the story was for Sulwe to have the agency for herself for her to liberate herself. She has a mother that is very supportive and offers her words of advice but it’s not until the imaginitave journey on the star that she finds the answer. And for me, that’s her finding it for herself.”

She continued: “Another important thing for me writing this book was that I didn’t downplay how hard it is when the world doesn’t offer you a right to the word beautiful. But, it is so important that amidst that, you are able to bestow it on yourself first and foresmost. Because then you are able to bolster yourself to challenge the world that you live in.”
