Basetsana Kumalo shares throwback photos of her younger self

Basetsana Kumalo is sharing throwback photos of her younger self. Before she was crowned Miss South Africa in 1994 and evolving into the successful businesswoman we know today, she was once an adorable little girl.

Basetsana is giving us a look back at her childhood through a few pictures and fond memories she’s shared on social media. This comes ahead of the release of her memoir, Bassie – My Journey of Hope in November.

In one of the posts, Basetsana shared that as a baby, she cried often. She said in part: “Most of my baby photos I am howling and here’s me all dressed in my Sunday’s best ruining the picture. I mean really.”

Like I did on this picture, I still smile when I remember the special times we had on Christmas Day. Our parents bought us new clothes, new shoes, new socks, yonke into, brand new stuff from head to toe! I was about 5 years old here, same age as my daughter Bontle ba Morena, and we spent that Christmas at my uncle’s place in Daveyton. He was a preacher – Reverend Sebotsa – and had a church called Uniting Reformed Church. I have such a fond memory of that Christmas Day, with my cousins and siblings. Christmas Eve was a hive of activity, baking (just the waft of “di-scones le di queens cake”) in the neighborhood, preparation ya “gemmer”, jelly being placed under the side board for it to set by the following day. On Christmas Day, it would be church first with your new swag and then the feast. The neighborhood photographer would be invited to come and take snaps of the family. You would be told to say “cheese”, that was supposed to mean “smile,” You would visit neighbours’ homes and be fed again and again, or be given sweets… Oh happy days… Loved my childhood! Such fond memories. #BassiesBook #JourneyOfHope
