Pearl Thusi on Behind the Story

by Fundiswa Nkwanyana
Pearl Thusi on Behind the Story

Fundiswa Nkwanyana had a chat with Pearl Thusi, the host of Behind the Story. This tell-all television show gives us insight into the lives of some of our favourite celebrities.

I’m honoured to be part of a TV show that helps bring the truth to light. I love that it’s about having meaningful and light-hearted conversations about controversial and seemly frivolous topics with the person at the centre of it all. It’s a chance for the celebrity to tell their story in their own words.

When doing the show, I draw inspiration from Felicia Mabuza-Suttle and Oprah Winfrey. I admire and respect them because they created a platform to share real stories in a safe environment, and I also want to do that. Additionally, I wanted to be part of something positive and empowering that can change people’s mindset.

I approach all my interviews with an open heart and no judgement. I believe that celebrities open up to me on the show because they can sense that I sincerely want to hear their story, and that I don’t have an ulterior motive. I also conduct in-depth research about the person I’m interviewing so I can be factually prepared. I aim to know as much as I can, and still be ready for any surprises or clarity on misinformation.

I must admit that I have a bias towards my interviews with young girls. I relate to their story because I was once a naïve young girl who was taken advantage of by people in the ndustry that I trusted. After my interview with Ntando Duma, I cried because I connected with her story as I understood where she was coming from. It hurts me that people take advantage of young girls, and I want to help and support them because I know what they are going through.

I’ve been blessed with incredible guests, and the show would be nothing without them. I have enjoyed all my interviews, and made a special connection with all my guests. I emotionally connected with Ntando, had fun with AKA and appreciated Zahara’s vulnerability on some of my shows. Kelly Khumalo’s interview was captivating while the one with Masechaba Ndlovu was insightful. I also enjoyed talking to Babes Wodumo, who has a special place in my heart. I really appreciate everyone who took the time to open up to me.

Catch the showon Wednesdays at 10pm on BET Africa.
