How to prepare for a job interview when you’re nervous

Job interviews can be stressful, especially when you really want the position. However, good preparation can help you manage your nerves and feel more confident.

Indeed reports that preparing for common interview questions, researching the company and conducting mock interviews can help reduce nervousness before an interview.

Research the organisation

Before your interview, research the organisation, its values and the position you applied for. Re-read the job description and identify the skills and responsibilities that are important for the role.

According to Indeed, reviewing the job description and researching the employer can help you prepare more relevant and confident answers.

Practise common questions

Prepare answers for questions such as:

  • “Tell us about yourself.”
  • “Why do you want this position?”
  • “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”
  • “Why should we hire you?”
  • “Tell us about a time you dealt with a difficult situation.”

Practise your answers aloud rather than memorising them word for word. Harvard Business Review notes that preparation and practice can make interviews feel less intimidating, particularly for candidates who worry about freezing during an interview.

Use the STAR method

For questions about previous experiences, the STAR method can help you structure your response.

S – Situation: Explain what happened.
T – Task: Describe what you needed to accomplish.
A – Action: Explain what you did.
R – Result: Share the outcome.

Indeed recommends preparing STAR examples based on the skills listed in the job description and practising them aloud.

Prepare the night before

Choose your outfit, organise your documents and check your route to the venue. If the interview is online, test your internet connection, camera and microphone.

Indeed also recommends having your CV and notes ready before the interview so you have fewer things to worry about on the day.

Don’t panic if you need a moment

You do not have to answer every question immediately. If your mind goes blank, take a breath and give yourself a few seconds to think.

Remember, being nervous does not mean you are unprepared. Focus on communicating your skills, experience and interest in the position. With preparation and practice, you can walk into the interview feeling more confident and ready.
