Orlando Pirates have paid an emotional tribute to Relebohile Mofokeng, thanking the talented youngster for his remarkable contribution to the club as he embarks on the next chapter of his football career.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder is now officially signed to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

In a heartfelt statement, the Buccaneers reflected on Mofokeng’s incredible journey, describing him as a once-in-a-generation talent whose impact extended far beyond goals and assists.

According to the club, his story began in 2022 during a training session at Rand Stadium, where senior players immediately recognised his exceptional ability after he was scouted through the Pirates Cup.

A rapid rise to stardom

Mofokeng made his senior debut for Orlando Pirates on 3 May 2023 while still a teenager. Within weeks, he had scored his first goal and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most influential players.

The club highlighted several defining moments, including his decisive goal after coming off the bench in the Nedbank Cup final, helping Orlando Pirates lift the trophy. He repeated his big-match heroics in the following season’s MTN8 final, contributing both a goal and an assist in another match-winning performance.

More than just football

While praising his technical ability, Orlando Pirates also applauded Mofokeng’s humility, maturity, and loyalty.

“That is what made the Buccaneers [faithfully] love him the way they did. Not just as a footballer, as a son, as the kid from the neighbourhood who made it and never forgot where he came from,” read the statement.

The club further revealed that despite receiving overseas interest last year, he chose to remain at Pirates because he wanted to help deliver a league title for the supporters. Mofokeng said his only focus was to give everything for Orlando Pirates before pursuing opportunities abroad.

As the young star prepares for a new challenge, Orlando Pirates thanked him for honouring his promise, inspiring supporters, and representing the badge with pride.

“We wish Relebohile nothing but the best in this new chapter of his career, but more importantly, thank him for everything.”

The club believes Europe will soon discover the talent South African football fans have admired since 2022, while Pirates supporters will remember him as one of the club’s brightest young stars.
