Fans witnessed another title race twist as Mamelodi Sundowns were held by Kaizer Chiefs in last night’s match at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Sundowns are chasing a ninth successive championship, coming from a goal down to salvage a share of the spoils, but with last night’s results, an opening door has been granted for Orlando Pirates to possibly dethrone Sundowns as the undisputed PSL kings.

The Buccaneers are three points behind but have a game in hand and a significantly better goal difference. This means three wins from their remaining trio of league fixtures may likely bring them a first title since 2012.

Mamelodi Sundowns suffered an injury blow when defender Keanu Cupido took a heavy blow to the chest and shoulder in a challenge with Siphesihle Ndlovu – necessitating the introduction of Grant Kekana.

Ndlovu was lucky to receive only a yellow card for having both a high foot and following through with his knee. Six minutes later, Kaizer Chiefs claimed a lead with Mduduzi Shabalala showing great vision and awareness to sneak a pass between two Sundowns defenders, tricking Ronwen Williams and scoring for a 1-0 lead.

The Brazilians made two substitutions at the beginning of the second half, introducing Nuno Santos and Thapelo Morena, and the team quickly made strides in equalising, making it 1-1.

Sundowns almost stole all three points deep in injury time when substitute Iqraam Rayners met a free kick and powered a header on target, but the brilliant Petersen managed to save it and ended the game 1-1.

The teams will return to Premiership action this coming weekend, with Sundowns at home to Siwelele FC on Saturday, and Chiefs away to Sekhukhune United on Sunday.
