Mamelodi Sundowns loses on home ground against Golden Arrows

Golden Arrows (Abafana Bes’thende) pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season on Sunday, 23 August 2026, defeating reigning Premier Soccer League champions Mamelodi Sundowns 1–0 on home soil at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

The single-goal victory in the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final tie leaves the Brazilian heavyweights with a steep hill to climb as they aim to reach the final of the prestigious cup competition.

Dion strikes against the run of play

Sundowns opened the contest with their characteristic dominance in possession, controlling tempo through the midfield and pinning the visitors inside their own defensive third. However, despite controlling early play, the hosts were repeatedly frustrated by tight offside flags and a sharp opening spell from the Golden Arrows backline.

The game’s turning point arrived in the 38th minute. Gaining possession deep inside their own half, Golden Arrows executed a textbook counter-attack. A swift sequence of passes cut through the central channel, allowing forward Sede Junior Dion to breach the defensive line and calmly slot his strike past the goalkeeper.

The strike silenced the home crowd and sent the visiting bench into wild celebrations.

Frustration for Sundowns as Arrows lock down

In the second half, Sundowns pushed aggressively for an equaliser, rotating personnel and overloading the flanks. Despite maintaining nearly two-thirds of the ball, the Pretoria outfit struggled to break through a stubborn, deeply blockaded Golden Arrows defence.

When the hosts did manage to create clear-cut chances, Golden Arrows held firm to protect their advantage, denying Sundowns any goalscoring rhythm. The loss marks a rare home setback for the Brazilians, who last lifted the MTN8 trophy during the 2021/22 campaign.

For Golden Arrows, the victory continues a remarkable defensive start to their campaign, marking their fourth consecutive clean sheet across all competitions this season.

All to play for in the second leg

With a 1–0 aggregate advantage and a crucial away goal, Golden Arrows head into the return leg with immense confidence as they chase their first MTN8 final appearance since their historic title-winning campaign in 2009.

Sundowns will have no choice but to adopt an all-out attack mindset when the two teams meet again for the decisive second leg on Sunday, 30 August 2026.
