Can England end Argentina’s reign and reach the World Cup final?

The stage is set for one of the biggest matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as England prepare to face reigning world champions Argentina in a blockbuster semifinal.

With a place in the final on the line, football fans around the globe are asking the same question: can the Three Lions finally overcome one of the tournament’s most formidable teams?

England are eyeing a first appearance in a World Cup final in 60 years as they hope to topple Argentina.

England’s moment of opportunity

England arrive full of confidence after an impressive World Cup campaign. Their journey to the semifinals has showcased resilience, tactical discipline, and attacking quality.

Gareth Southgate’s side has demonstrated the ability to remain composed under pressure while producing decisive moments when they matter most.

The blend of experienced leaders and exciting young talent gives England genuine belief that this could be the tournament where they finally end years of World Cup heartbreak.

Argentina will have to find a way to stop Harry Kane, who is England’s joint-top scorer at the tournament alongside Bellingham, on six goals each.

Argentina remains the team to beat

Argentina will enter the match carrying the confidence of being the defending champions. Their experience in high-pressure knockout matches, technical quality, and winning mentality make them one of the most dangerous teams in world football.

They have consistently shown the ability to control possession, create chances, and remain calm during difficult moments. Even when opponents have challenged them, Argentina have found ways to win.

Lionel Messi has his sights set on back-to-back World Cup triumphs. But after his exertions to help drag Argentina this far, and now aged 39, does he have it in him to get past England?

The great number 10 will occupy his usual space in the inside-right position, with the freedom to drift out wide.

The match promises to be a tightly contested semifinal between two outstanding teams. Argentina may begin as slight favourites because of their championship pedigree and experience, but England certainly have the talent and tactical organisation to cause an upset.

The England vs Argentina FIFA World Cup semifinal kicks off at 9pm.
