World Breastfeeding Week: Tips for increasing milk supply naturally

Breastfeeding offers vital nutrition for babies while supporting bonding and maternal health. During World Breastfeeding Week, many new mothers seek practical ways to boost their milk supply.

While milk production varies from person to person, the good news is that supply often increases with consistent breastfeeding and healthy lifestyle habits. Consider these helpful tips.

Breastfeed more often

The more frequently your baby feeds, the more milk your body is signalled to produce. Aim to breastfeed on demand rather than on a strict schedule, especially during your baby’s early weeks.

Ensure your baby has a good latch, as effective milk removal is key to maintaining supply. Clicks also recommends emptying your breasts using a pump (or you could pump manually) every two to three hours if you’re separated from your baby.

Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet

Breastfeeding mothers need adequate fluids and nutritious meals to support milk production. Medirite recommends paying attention when your body tells you to drink more water.

Eating the right food also boosts milk supply. Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, fruit and vegetables. While no single food has been proven to dramatically increase milk supply, a varied diet helps meet your body’s increased nutritional needs.

Prioritise rest and reduce stress

Sleep deprivation and ongoing stress can make breastfeeding more challenging. Although getting enough rest with a newborn isn’t always easy, accepting help from family and friends can provide valuable opportunities to rest and recover.

Consider pumping between feeds

If advised by a healthcare professional or lactation consultant, pumping between breastfeeding sessions can help stimulate additional milk production by increasing breast stimulation and milk removal. According to The Lactation Network, the economic model of ‘supply and demand’ applies to breast milk production as well.

Seek professional support

If you’re concerned about low milk supply, consult a lactation consultant, midwife or healthcare provider. They can assess your baby’s latch, feeding patterns and overall growth, and identify any underlying issues that may be affecting breastfeeding.

Every breastfeeding journey is unique. With patience, regular feeding and the right support, many mothers are able to establish and maintain a healthy milk supply while giving their babies the best possible start in life.
