Let’s be honest, we all enjoy having a good cuddle with the one’s we hold the nearest and dearest to our hearts. To be held, embraced and snuggled up brings many people a sense of joy, warmth and most of all – feeling loved.
As the colder winter months approach, this form of appreciation is often becomes more common in many family households regardless of whether it is between husband and wife, girlfriend and boyfriend, or parents showing love to their little one’s.
However, according to multiple medical publications, what many people might not be aware of is that there are several medical benefits that come with the act of cuddling.
Improves immunity
According to medical practitioner Dr Will Cole, at least 75 percent of your immune system is in your gut. He goes on to explain that our gut and brain are linked to one another on what is known as the gut-brain axis. This is the reason many people often feel butterflies when seeing a significant other. The reason is because of what is known as oxytocin.
“T-regulatory cells, which are responsible for keeping your immune system balanced, are boosted when there is an increase in oxytocin.”
Improves sleep quality
The wellness publication Well Good explains that having a good cuddling session before bed is known to have positive results when it comes to your sleep. Again, it is during this physical closeness that your brain releases oxytocin. Dr.Dorfman explains that this counters the production of a stress hormone called ‘cortisol’.
“This lowered cortisol and increased oxytocin promote feelings of safety, security, and relaxation—all of which facilitate sleep.” Having a higher level of oxytocin has also been linked to having fewer nightmares, adds Dr. Harry.
Reduces stress
We often fall asleep when we are calm and stress-free. It is said that cuddling is the perfect way of ensuring this. According to wellness publication Health Shots, this is known to boost your serotonin levels in your body as well.
“This in turn makes you feel good about yourself and can be immensely beneficial when you find yourself in a negative headspace,” explain the publication.
