A man from Limpopo has been arrested and charged with stabbing and murdering his roommate over mealie meal.

According to ZiMoja, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, a South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Limpopo, told the entertainment publication that the deceased was found with a sharp knife on his upper body.

He further explained that the two men shared a rented room, adding that a fight occurred between them because the deceased had given away some mealie meal to someone without the suspect knowing.

“Emergency medical services were called to the scene and the victim was declared dead. Police said the slain man’s identity was withheld for the ongoing investigations. Police opened a case of murder and the suspect, who is a foreign national, was arrested after he handed himself to the police,” says the SAPS spokesperson.

The above-mentioned publication reports that the suspect had been taken into police custody, and according to sources, this incident occurred in the early hours of the day when they could hear a fight break out between the two men. By the time the police force arrived, the victim was already declared dead as he suffered stab wounds from his upper body.

With the matter currently being under investigation, Colonel Ledwaba says, “Police opened a case of murder for further investigations and the suspect appeared before the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrates Court on Tuesday. The matter was postponed for formal bail application.”
