With fuel prices continuing to influence household budgets, choosing a car that can travel further on less fuel can make a meaningful difference to monthly motoring costs.

CarTracker reports that, for South African motorists, particularly those who spend long hours commuting in city traffic, fuel efficiency is an important factor to consider alongside purchase price, servicing, practicality and safety.

Here are relatively fuel-efficient cars worth considering in the South African market.

1. Renault Kwid

The Renault Kwid is one of the more affordable small-car options available locally and is designed with economical everyday motoring in mind. Its 1.0-litre petrol engine has a claimed fuel consumption figure of 4.4 litres/100 km.

According to Renault South Africa, the Kwid starts at around R178,799, although prices vary according to specification and promotions. Its compact dimensions make it a practical choice for urban driving, parking and shorter daily commutes.

2. Suzuki Swift

The Suzuki Swift has established itself as a popular small hatchback in South Africa, combining a compact footprint with relatively low fuel consumption.

The report says the current 2026 listings show the 1.2-litre Swift with claimed consumption figures around 4.4–4.6 litres/100 km, depending on the derivative and transmission.

The Swift can therefore appeal to motorists looking for a small, economical car without being limited to very short city trips.

3. Kia Picanto

The Kia Picanto is another compact option for motorists who prioritise fuel economy. Current South African specifications list the 1.0-litre manual at approximately 5.1 litres/100 km, while the automatic version is listed at about 5.3 litres/100 km.

Its small dimensions make it particularly suited to urban environments, where easy parking and manoeuvrability can be just as important as fuel consumption.

4. Hyundai Grand i10

The Hyundai Grand i10 is a practical alternative for buyers who want a small car with a little more interior space. Previous local testing of the Grand i10 1.2 recorded real-world consumption of around 5.6 litres/100 km, close to the manufacturer’s claimed figure at the time.

The model remains available in South Africa, with 2026 listings including 1.0-litre manual and 1.2-litre automatic derivatives.

5. Toyota Starlet

The Toyota Starlet is another option worth considering for South African motorists who want a compact hatchback while keeping an eye on fuel usage. Earlier South African market data listed the Starlet 1.5 Xi at approximately 5.4 litres/100 km.

Toyota’s extensive local presence also means buyers can consider factors such as dealer accessibility, servicing and parts availability when calculating the overall cost of ownership.

TopAuto says a car’s claimed fuel-consumption figure should not be the only consideration when shopping for an economical vehicle.

Actual consumption can vary according to traffic, driving style, road conditions, tyre pressure, vehicle load and air-conditioner use. South African motorists should also compare the purchase price, insurance, servicing costs, warranty, safety equipment and resale value before making a decision on any car.
