Ice-cold drinks for hours? Here’s how to do it right

February is one of the hottest months in South Africa, and many people are still making the most of summer by heading to the beach, enjoying picnics, or planning outdoor adventures. A well-packed cooler box can make all the difference, keeping your food fresh and your drinks icy cold.

Here’s how to pack your cooler box like a pro and ensure everything stays cool for longer:

1. Pick the right cooler

Choose a cooler box that suits your outing. For a day trip, a medium-sized cooler will do, while longer excursions call for a larger, well-insulated option. A hard-sided cooler retains the cold better than a soft-sided one.

2. Pre-chill your cooler

Before packing, pre-chill the cooler by placing ice packs or a bag of ice inside for a few hours. This will lower the internal temperature and help maintain cool conditions for longer.

3. Use the right ice

Use a mix of ice packs, frozen water bottles, and crushed ice. Ice packs last longer and don’t create a mess, while crushed ice helps cool things quickly.

You can also freeze juice boxes or water bottles—this keeps drinks cold and provides extra ice as they melt.

4. Pack in layers

  • Start with a layer of ice packs at the bottom.
  • Place raw meats in sealed, leak-proof containers and position them at the bottom to stay extra cold.
  • Stack dairy products, snacks, and pre-made meals next.
  • Drinks should go on top, as they are accessed the most.
  • Fill any gaps with smaller ice packs or frozen items to prevent warm air pockets.

5. Keep items dry and separated

Use airtight containers to prevent sogginess and cross-contamination. If packing salads or sandwiches, store dressings, and condiments separately to avoid soggy meals.

6. Limit cooler access

Every time you open the lid, warm air gets in. Pack drinks in a separate cooler if possible, so the main cooler stays cold longer.

7. Keep it shaded

Never leave your cooler in direct sunlight. Keep it in a shaded area, under a tree, or cover it with a light-reflective towel to prevent excessive heat exposure.

8. Don’t drain the ice water

Unless items are getting waterlogged, leaving melted ice in the cooler can help maintain a lower temperature for longer.

Tip: DIY long-lasting ice bricks

For an easy, homemade ice block that lasts all day, fill an empty milk carton with water and a few cotton balls before freezing. The cotton helps insulate the ice, keeping it frozen longer.
