All you need to know about how to store avocados

We all know there’s no better addition to your Caesar salad or toasted bread than the buttery feel of a freshly ripened avocado. As delicious as they are, avocados are known to be extremely unpredictable and can reach their expiration just as quickly as they’ve ripened.

If you’ve contemplated placing your avo’s in the fridge or simply wondered if you can, we’ve got you covered from start to finish with the 101 on how and when you should be placing your favourite pear-shaped green fruit in the fridge.

Should you be placing your avocados in the fridge?

The short answer is, yes you can place your ripened or cut avocados in the fridge. Placing ripened avo’s or used ones in the refrigerator is an excellent way to help with the prolonging/ slowing down of further ripening.

Ripened avocados should be used within three to four days once ripened. Thus, it’s important to keep a close eye on your avocados while they are kept on your countertop for 4-5 days.

How to store your avocados:

Whole avocados that have not yet reached their ripened state can be kept either in your pantry or countertop. If you are looking to speed up the process, we recommend placing your avo’s in newspaper or a brown paper bag.

Once you feel that your avocados have ripened, place them in the produce section or crisper drawer of your fridge to maintain freshness.

How to store halved or sliced avocados in the fridge:

When storing your avocados in the crisper drawer or storage container of your fridge. Tightly seal your avo’s (leave the skin and pit in place) with cling-wrap and place in an air-tight container before placing it in the fridge.

Food tip: leaving the skin and pit of your avocado helps with longer freshness and prevents oxidation.
