Get ready for cough season

Winter is coming, which means coughs, sniffles and sore throats – and a whole lot of headaches for moms. When one family member starts coughing – the rest usually all follow. It’s always better to be prepared, so here are a few tips on getting ready for cough season.

Stock up your medicine cabinet

Don’t wait until a cough starts before you rush to the pharmacy. You’ll need cough syrup and lozenges as well to treat itchy throats. A simple chest solution like Puma® can be used for the whole family. Make sure you always have a bottle in your medicine cabinet, and you can be confident that you’ll have a solution for wet coughs.

Wash hands

Germs spread through coughing – regularly washing your hands is the most basic way to stop the spread of germs. Get into a hand washing habit and encourage your whole family to do the same.

Avoid cough triggers

Winter air is full of cough triggers, like smoke and dust. Even cold air can trigger a coughing fit.

Healthy eating and drinking

It’s important to keep eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies to boost our immune systems. Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and tea with honey and ginger is wonderfully soothing for coughs, sore throats and stuffy noses.

Don’t let a cough get worse

If you have a wet cough, check the colour of your phlegm – if it’s yellow or green, this is a sign of infection. Don’t let a cough become something more serious, like bronchitis or pneumonia, which could result in many days of missed school or work.

There’s no guarantee we can avoid coughs this winter – but we can do our best to manage them. Here’s to keeping our families happy and health this winter!
