Rooibos is indigenous to the Cederberg Mountains in the Western Cape. It is enjoyed globally, but only grows locally. It is gaining popularity as a caffeine-free healthy beverage. Professor Christo Muller, chief specialist scientist at the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), recommends drinking between five and six cups of rooibos tea per day. Here are its most common health benefits:

1. Keeps high blood pressure in check – Known as a bronchodilator, the tea not only relieves respiratory conditions, but also reduces high blood pressure.

2. Improves gut health – It acts as an antispasmodic agent, and reduces stomach cramps and diarrhoea.

3. Builds and repairs muscle tissue – Its free radical antioxidants help you look and feel younger by slowing down the ageing process. They also improve recovery after exercise, resulting in more lean muscle and less fat in the long run.

4. Lowers risk of cancer – Research at the SAMRC found that both green (unfermented) and traditional (fermented) rooibos significantly inhibit the growth of cancer cells. The flavonoids found in rooibos tea are famous for fighting and preventing cancer.

5. Prevents insomnia – Rooibos is caffeine-free and keeps your body’s cortisol levels (stress hormones) in check. So, it will soothe and ease nervous tensions, thereby promoting a good night’s rest.
