Although it’s made a huge return on catwalks, fur hasn’t done well in South Africa as it has overseas. The biggest reason is that we simply don’t know how to wear it.
When I see fur, I think luxury, glamour and old money, but I noticed that very few people are able to incorporate it to their daily wear. Just like we have learnt how to rock animal print without looking trashy, we can also master how to rock fur without looking like a chinchilla.
Wear it in small doses like J-Lo
If you’re shy to try trends, start small. Get a fur handbag or a hat and pair that with a trendy jumpsuit or a denim dungaree.
Make it casual like Janelle Monáe
Just because it’s fur, it doesn’t mean you have to wear an evening dress or stilettos. Get a sexy fur scarf and wear it over a basic long-sleeved or crew neck t-shirt. For an even cosier look, you can replace the t-shirt with light but tight knitwear and a blazer. But, if you’d rather keep it simple, wear a fur gilet over a basic long-sleeved t-shirt and a maxi skirt.
Make it formal like Rihanna
Take the trend further by taking it with you to the office. Avoid those cute, extremely fuzzy fur boots or big fur coats, and replace them with a simple high-heeled bootie with fur trim or pair a formal tube dress and a trench coat with fur trim and; voila! furs your friend!
Jump the gun like Karrueche and Chris Brown
On to the item that even I am threatened by – the over the top, fluffy fur coat. A nice-to-know is that this item can be worn over denims, formal work wear, and I’ve even seen people wearing it with sneakers or gladiators, incorporating it in to street style. So, don’t be afraid – as long as you don’t do too much fur then you’re bound to work the trend with style and class.
