Ultimate guide to Y2K makeup trends

The nostalgic Y2K trend is making a comeback in the fashion scene, with artists like Tyla embracing these styles. Certain makeup looks popular in the early 2000s are also set to return.

We might be in 2024, but many fashion and makeup heads find different ways to pull inspiration from Y2K trends. The popular aesthetic simply focused on fashion and makeup looks without the vast and advanced technology there is today.

According to the beauty hub, L’Oreal Paris, many internet users have transitioned into creating more cleaner and crisp makeup looks which can be achieved by adding brown lip liner with some gloss and having bright eyeshadow colours.

Various beauty hubs take it back in time with these Y2K makeup trends:

  1. Colourful eyeliner: Some beauty brands are bringing back this popular trend by developing eyeliners that create a more vibrant makeup look. Faces Canada adds that this cat-eye look adds pops of colour around your eyes.

2. Colourful Eyeliner and Natural-Looking Skin: L’Oreal Paris states that in the early 2000s makeup looks were bolder and brighter, adding, that people focused on creating more natural retro looks with colourful eyeliners with no foundation added.

 3. Glitter eye look: This makeup look wins the cup, as neutral eyeshadows tend to create a dull overall makeup look. Who Wore What suggests using a bold colour and layering it with cream eyeshadows.

 4. Glossy Ombré Lips: Ditch your red lipstick and learn to layer up your lipstick looks. L’Oreal Paris says that to achieve a gradient look, trace the shape of your lips with a dark lip liner, then use a lip brush to blur the borders, apply lighter lipstick, fill in the centre, blend colours, and finish with a clear, high-shine gloss.
