Simple beauty habits that make your makeup look better

Great makeup starts before you reach for foundation. A few simple beauty habits can create a smoother, fresher-looking base and help your makeup sit more evenly throughout the day.

The best part? You don’t need a complicated routine or a bathroom shelf packed with products.

Start with clean, comfortable skin

Makeup generally looks better when applied to clean skin. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser to remove excess oil, sweat and impurities, but avoid over-cleansing, which can leave skin feeling dry or irritated. According to Garnier, it is recommended to cleanse up to twice a day and after sweating.

Don’t skip moisturiser

According to Glowday, moisturising helps with improving makeup application. Applying moisturiser to slightly damp skin helps lock in hydration, while choosing a formula suited to your skin type can help prevent your complexion from looking overly dry or greasy.

Give your moisturiser a little time to settle before applying foundation or concealer. This can help create a more comfortable, even canvas.

Make SPF a daily habit

According to Clicks, daily sun protection is an essential beauty habit as well as a skincare step. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and apply it before makeup. Sunscreen should not be replaced by relying solely on SPF in foundation or other cosmetics.

Be gentle with exfoliation

Regular exfoliation can be useful for some skin types, but more is not necessarily better. Over-exfoliating can strip the skin and make dryness or irritation more noticeable under makeup.

Instead, focus on consistent, gentle skincare and adjust your routine according to how your skin feels.

Keep your tools clean

Finally, clean makeup brushes and applicators regularly and avoid sharing them. As reported by Glamour, daily grime from our makeup brushes can cause breakouts, congestion and skin irritation.

This simple habit of using clean tools can help reduce the transfer of oil, dead skin cells and bacteria onto your complexion.

Ultimately, better-looking makeup is less about adding more products and more about giving your skin the care it needs first.
