There’s no denying that cosmetic and plastic surgeries are the new ‘it’ thing globally. It feels like everyone wants a trip to Turkey for a beauty upgrade.

Beauty is evolving daily. This includes hairstyles, how we do nails, and fashion. Some of the common surgeries that help many to fit the standard of beauty nowadays include Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), breast augmentation, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction, and facial rejuvenation (blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty).

According to Clevaland Clinic, plastic surgery alters certain areas of your body to treat medical issues or enhance appearance. All surgical procedures come with risks, plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures are often complex. They may alter sensitive structures near major organs or delicate tissue. Cosmetic procedures can make significant changes to areas of your body that are otherwise healthy.

According to the above-mentioned source, here are some of the potential risks that come with cosmetic surgery:

  • Infection: One of the most common risks, occurring in about 0.5% of cases.
  • Hematoma/Bleeding: Localised bleeding outside blood vessels that may require intervention.
  • Seroma (Fluid Build-up): Clear fluid collecting under the skin, often at a surgical site like a tummy tuck.
  • Nerve Damage: Leading to temporary or permanent loss of sensation or movement.
  • Skin Necrosis (Tissue Death): Dying skin tissue, which can be severe.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) & Pulmonary Embolism: Rare (0.09% of cases) but potentially fatal blood clots, riskier with multiple procedures.
  • Capsular Contracture: In breast surgeries, the scar tissue around the implant tightens.
  • Anesthesia Complications: Respiratory issues or allergic reactions.
