How to take care of your pantihose this winter

It’s winter time, which means it’s time to whip out those pantihose and pile on the layers.

Personally, I am a huge fan of pantihose, as it can help take a summer fit and make it winter ready. They can even help give your look a more formal or professional flare.

They are so versatile and you can pair your pantihose with shorts, mini skirts or summer dresses. If you have thunder thighs as I do, pantihose is a lifesaver when it comes to chaffing.

Thank goodness they are so affordable too, but with the nylon/spandex combination, they are not resistant to wear and tear.

Our solution is to take care of your hose to ensure that they stay at their optimal condition,  shaving a few rands off your spending by making them last longer. Here’s how.

Scrunch them up

If you’re like me, you run your legs through the top and pull your stockings up your leg, as you would any normal pants. Instead, you should roll the pantihose up until it is in a heap, leaving just enough space for your toes to enter. Insert your toes and gently pull the stockings up to your knees. Once the hose is up to both knees, then you can pull them up your thighs. This will help to reduce the stretch, which may lead to holes down the line.

Treat snags and tears immediately

It is recommended to inspect your pantihose after every wear and/or wash. As soon as you spot a new one, apply some clear nail polish to prevent the tear from growing. Leave them out to dry before packing them away to avoid smudging the nail polish onto any other garment.

Wash pantihose separately

Never, never, NEVER wash your stockings in the washing machine as they might get caught on buttons or zips and cause more damage to snags and tears. Hand wash your hose with soap and cold water every 5-6 wears and let them air dry. Not only are you saving your stockings by not washing them after every wear, but you’re doing your bit for the environment too – whoo whoo!
