How to spice up your corporate hun look for summer

The corporate dress code doesn’t always align with needing to keep cool during summer. And trying to stay cool, while wearing slacks and button-ups can be a balancing act. With these tips though, your summer work wardrobe will be smart, chic, and most importantly, keep you cool.

Summer office essentials

Lightweight blazers

An unlined blazer in a soft, lightweight material like linen or cotton instantly polishes your look without adding bulk. These can be layered over a blouse or dress, creating a finished look that can handle any meeting or presentation.

Breathable fabrics

Cotton, linen, and light rayon blends are ideal for summer wear, especially in work settings. Look for these fabrics in shirts, skirts, trousers, and dresses to help regulate your body temperature without sacrificing professionalism.

Midi dresses and skirts

The midi length is a great middle ground, keeping you covered without sacrificing airflow. Choose flowy silhouettes and breathable materials that add movement to your outfit while staying work-appropriate.

Tailored trousers and culottes

Tailored pants in lighter fabrics, like cotton or linen, keep you cool and comfortable. Opt for wide-leg trousers or cropped culottes, which are breathable and can be dressed up or down, depending on your office vibe.

Styling tips to stay cool (and look cool) at work

Even in a corporate setting, you can bring in some summer flair while still looking office-appropriate. Here are some go-to styling tips for summer workwear:

Opt for lighter colours

Black may be chic, but lighter hues like soft neutrals, pastels, or even white will help you stay cooler by reflecting sunlight. A soft beige suit or a pale pink blouse can add freshness to your summer look while keeping it professional.

Layer smartly

Layering is key for the transition from the outdoors to an air-conditioned office. Stick to lightweight cardigans, blazers, or button-ups that can be worn over dresses or camisoles. This way, you’ll have a layer to add in case the AC is on full blast, but you’re not weighed down by heavy material.

Accessorise with intention

Accessories can give your outfit a polished edge without adding warmth. A pair of statement earrings or a lightweight scarf adds sophistication without the added layers. Avoid heavy jewellery, which can feel stifling in warm weather.

Choose closed-toe, breathable shoes

Sandals are often a no-go in corporate spaces, but loafers, mules, or block-heeled pumps are great summer-appropriate options that keep you looking put-together. Choose styles with open backs or cutouts for more ventilation.

Staying polished in a corporate dress code

If you’re navigating a strict dress code, summer dressing can be a bit more challenging. But with a few strategic pieces, you can stay within the guidelines without compromising on comfort:

Go with structured pieces

While flowy and casual styles may be great outside of work, in corporate settings, a bit of structure can help keep you looking professional. A fitted linen blazer or a tailored pair of trousers can keep you cool while adhering to more formal standards.

Stick to classic silhouettes

A-line skirts, wrap dresses, and straight-leg trousers work well in corporate environments while allowing you to incorporate lighter fabrics. Choose cuts that are modest and classic to keep it professional while still feeling summery.

Opt for sleeveless, but bring a layer

If your office allows sleeveless tops, go for them in breathable fabrics but keep a blazer or cardigan on hand for meetings or cooler indoor settings. Tank-style tops in soft materials like silk or cotton provide a sleek, sophisticated look when paired with tailored pants or skirts.
