Proper grooming of dreadlocks is essential for maintaining their health, appearance, and longevity. Whether you are newly locked or have mature dreadlocks, understanding the right care techniques helps prevent damage and keeps your hair looking neat and vibrant.

Before cleaning your locks, you need to understand how to grow dreadlocks.

How do you grow locks?

According to GQ, growing locks and encouraging hair to form locks isn’t that difficult. There are several strands of hair put together using a comb to create a coil. The hair shrinks back on itself, intertwines, and that’s what creates a lock. After a period of time, which is called ‘budding,’ the lock transforms from a coil to a mature lock.

As always, a meticulous hair regimen will help maintain your growing dreadlocks and keep them growing healthy.

So how do you clean them?

Cleaning and Washing

You may not believe it, but dreadlocks do need regular washing to stay clean and healthy. You need to use a residue-free shampoo to avoid buildup that can cause odour or scalp irritation.

Wash your dreadlocks every one to two weeks and ensure you rinse thoroughly to remove all shampoo.

Drying

Proper drying is crucial to prevent mildew or unpleasant smells. After washing, gently squeeze out excess water using a microfibre towel or an old cotton T-shirt.

Allow your dreadlocks to air dry completely, or use a hairdryer on a low heat setting. Never go to bed with wet dreadlocks.

Maintenance and retwisting

To keep dreadlocks tidy, regularly palm roll or twist new growth at the roots, especially in the early stages. Retwisting should be done carefully every four to six weeks to avoid scalp stress or hair breakage. Avoid over-manipulating your locks, as this can lead to thinning or damage.

Moisturising

Although dreadlocks do not require frequent moisturising like loose hair, keeping your scalp hydrated is vital. Use light natural oils such as jojoba, coconut, or argan oil sparingly to soothe dryness and prevent flakes. Apply oils mainly to the scalp rather than the locks themselves.

Mistakes to avoid when grooming your locks

  • Do not use waxes or heavy products that can cause buildup and attract dirt.
  • Avoid excessive pulling or tight hairstyles that strain the roots.
  • Protect your dreadlocks at night with a silk or satin scarf or pillowcase to reduce friction.

When you follow these grooming practices, you promote healthy dreadlocks that are strong, clean, and stylish. But with anything, patience and consistent care are important in embracing the beauty of your locks.
