Tyla slapped with lawsuit over ‘Water’ credits

Grammy Award-winning pop star Tyla Seethal and producer Sammy SoSo (real name Samuel Awuku) have found themselves embroiled in a lawsuit.

This comes after two collaborators dragged the singer, her producer and Sony Music Entertainment to court over a credit and royalty dispute involving Tyla’s hit song “Water”.

In the lawsuit, the collaborators Olmo Zucca and Jackson LoMastro alleged that they were not credited as top-line producers. The pair claim that four producers were present during the recording session. This includes themselves, along with Sammy Soso and Rayan El-Hussein Goufar better known as “Rayo”, who are alleged to have equally participated in the creative process.

Olomo and Jackson say they later handed audio files to Sammy which were transferred to his computer and were all part of the final master. However, they were later listed as “co-composers and co-authors” while the latter were listed as the two top line producers.

They say that this has harmed their reputation and careers, preventing them from acquiring new and bigger composing opportunities. The two believe that because each of the individuals contributed equally towards the song, all of them should be credited as top-line producers and receive an equal compensation of the royalties.

“Defendants have wrongfully deprived each plaintiff of a 12.5% share of the publishing royalties generated from the exploitation of the song and of a pro rata share of the master/record royalties and standard sound exchange royalties for the song,” the lawsuit adds.

They now request a 12.5% share of publishing royalties and also want a producing credit.
