Meet Tilly Norwood: Hollywood’s Controversial New “Actress”
An AI-generated actress has taken the internet by storm this past weekend, and the creative world is divided. Tilly Norwood, a composite “girl-next-door” described on Instagram as an aspiring actress, has quickly drawn both curiosity and criticism.
Her creator, Eline Van der Velden, spoke at an industry panel in Switzerland, explaining that the character has already caught the eye of talent agents and studios.

“When we first launched Tilly, people were like, ‘What’s that?’ Now we’re going to announce which agency will represent her in the next few months,” Van der Velden said.
Tilly has even appeared in a short sketch, and Van der Velden told Broadcast International that the goal is ambitious:
“We want Tilly to be the next Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman… People are realizing their creativity doesn’t need to be boxed in by a budget. There are no constraints creatively, and that’s why AI can be a positive.”
A Hollywood Red Line
But Hollywood’s creative community isn’t embracing AI so easily. The controversy over AI-generated performers was a major sticking point during the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, and many industry professionals see Tilly as crossing a line.
Melissa Barrera, star of Scream, called on actors to boycott talent agents involved with the AI project:
“Hope all actors repped by the agent that does this, drop their a$$. How gross, read the room,” she wrote on Instagram.
Mara Wilson, the 1996 Matilda star, also voiced concern, pointing out that Tilly’s face was composed from hundreds of real women:
“And what about the hundreds of living young women whose faces were composited together to make her? You couldn’t hire any of them?”
Defending Tilly: Art, Not Replacement
In a lengthy Instagram post, Van der Velden defended Tilly, insisting she is not intended to replace human actors:
“She is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work – a piece of art. Like many forms of art before her, she sparks conversation… AI offers another way to imagine and build stories.”
Van der Velden emphasized that studios quietly experimenting with AI are motivated by the potential to reduce production costs, not to replace talent.
