The Springboks have unofficially and quickly become South Africa’s national treasure. Not only has the talented squad dominated even the strongest of rugby teams, but they have also managed to unite a country where inequality is rife.
As of late, it seems dropping everything to show the Bokke as much support as possible, regardless of the venue, time or date has become the ultimate display of patriotism in Mzansi. This weekend was no different as 60,000 South Africans and rugby fans came together to fill up Ellis Park Stadium and witness the clash of one of the biggest and longest-standing rivalries in world rugby.
The significance of this particular match is deeper than what the talented players do on the field, but it is about what it is that the Springboks represent and stand for, which is a rainbow nation filled with so much hope and potential. It is safe to say this matchup lived up to the expectations as both teams delivered a world-class performance, giving the people an action-packed, nail-biting thriller until the very end.
The national rugby team have been on a path of destruction, annihilating any team that dare stands in its way, which the experts attribute to coach Rassie’s cunning and intelligent nature, as well as the unimaginable depth the squad possesses. The Boks are often able to wear down their opponents by utilising their powerful bench in a way that has never been done before.
In what can only be described as a nail-biter, New Zealand displayed what could arguably be considered their best collective effort and dominated throughout the majority of the game. This was however not enough, as anyone who knows anything about the Springboks knows that the party is not over until the fat lady sings, with the Bokke sneaking a 31-27 victory over the All-Blacks, which has not been an easy feat for the home team at Ellis Park, with their last victory coming years prior.

Although everyone can agree the athletes gave it their all, some fans and experts have noted the number of questionable calls that the referees missed/made. Bongi Mbonambi’s try in the 16th minute is one example, where some feel as though the ball was knocked on before the hooker could score. A yellow card issued to the ‘Weekend Special’ Aphelele Fassie, as well as Sam Cane’s questionable high tackle which resulted in the Springbok captain’s broken cheekbone, were among other calls that were questioned by the public.
The most heartwarming moment happened after the game, when Siya Kolisi took a lap around Ellis Park, celebrating with fans. This heartwarming moment is a testament to how one’s name is a prophecy of one’s life. The name Siyamthanda, which translates to ‘We love him’, was given to this boy from Zwide who would be loved by an entire nation, for what he represents, which is bigger than anyone can imagine.
