Scholar transportation drivers operating in Johannesburg are urging parents to actively be involved in their children’s lives and constantly stay informed about their whereabouts.
This comes after scholar transport driver Nhlanhla Mbule who has been in the industry for more than 20-years recently shared his concern about young taxi drivers who are allegedly encouraging pupils to bunk school to attend house parties and drink liquor.
In an interview with news publication Daily Sun, he said the main target are high school learners of who many are in grade 8.
Nhlanhla told the publication that it’s sad to think that parents pay so much money for transportation only for their children to do as they please on a Friday.
He further added that there is a suspicion that these guys sleep with the learner, but they might be too fearful to come out and tell the truth.
With this now placing the entire scholar transportation in a bad light, Mpho Khabola, the executive member of the Unity Scholar Transporters Association, shared that they spend lots of time chasing these young drivers.
“These boys are painting us badly. When this goes out, people will start saying that transport drivers are doing this and that to school children, forgetting that not all of us are involved in these activities,” he said.
Meanwhile, he further highlights that these drivers are reckless and often drive while under the influence of alcohol, doing so puts everyone’s lives at risk when accidents occur.
Mpho asked police to intervene and arrest those involved as these are serious offences.
