Broadcaster and sports presenter Mpho Maboi is facing a tax judgment after the South African Revenue Service (SARS) obtained a default judgment over an outstanding personal income tax debt of more than R468,000.

According to court papers cited by Briefly News, Mpho’s original tax liability was just over R336,000. The amount increased after SARS added more than R14,600 in interest and nearly R135,000 in penalties.
SARS issued a final demand
SARS issued Mpho with a final letter of demand on 19 June 2026, stating that the outstanding balance was R468,136.42.
She was given 10 business days to settle the amount or make use of relief options available under tax legislation. These included entering into an instalment agreement, requesting the suspension of payment while disputing the assessment, or applying for a compromise, according to MDNtv.
SARS also warned that further recovery measures could follow if the matter was not resolved.
These measures can include approaching third parties holding money on behalf of the taxpayer or seeking a warrant that allows a sheriff to attach and sell assets to recover the outstanding debt.

Mpho Maboi responds
Mpho has acknowledged the judgment and said that her legal and financial representatives are working with SARS on the matter.
“Yes, I’m aware. My lawyer, accountant and SARS are dealing with it… A reversal of the judgment is pending. I’m not ducking my responsibilities as a law-abiding citizen,” she said, according to Briefly News.
Her comments indicate she intends to challenge or reverse the judgment.
What the judgment means
Under South Africa’s tax administration framework, SARS can follow a legal process to obtain judgment for an outstanding tax debt after the required notices have been issued.
Importantly, the judgment does not by itself establish that Mpho deliberately avoided paying tax. It concerns an assessed tax debt and SARS’s efforts to recover the amount it says remains outstanding.

Mpho is an established South African broadcaster and sports presenter with more than two decades of experience in radio, television, sports broadcasting and entertainment.
She has previously worked at Metro FM, YFM, Kaya FM and SuperSport. She continues to work in broadcasting and recently spoke about entering a new professional and personal chapter.
The latest development comes as Mpho prepares to navigate the tax matter with SARS while her representatives pursue the pending reversal of the judgment.
