The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has taken a strong stance against recent social media claims alleging that it has prohibited motorists from carrying passengers, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The organisation categorically described these reports as ‘false and misleading,‘ arising from videos that purported to show Santaco members preventing drivers from transporting family and friends.
In an official statement, Santaco expressed concern over the spread of misinformation, asserting, ‘We wish to place it on record that Santaco has never issued such communication and has never imposed any mode of transport on the public.’

The council made it clear that any assertions to the contrary are not representative of their policies or practices.
The council vehemently condemned any acts of intimidation aimed at motorists, noting that taxi operations, like all forms of paid transport, are voluntary choices available to passengers.
‘We strongly urge members of the media to exercise caution and verify information with us before publishing reports of this nature. Publishing misleading information without affording Santaco a right of reply misleads the public and damages trust in the sector,’ they stated.

Furthermore, Santaco clarified that only law enforcement authorities possess the legal mandate to enforce transport regulations in South Africa.
The organisation encouraged the public to report any instances of harassment or unlawful enforcement directly to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.
Santaco reaffirmed its commitment to serving the nation with integrity and transparency, urging the public to remain vigilantly informed and aware amidst the swirling misinformation.
