Musa Mseleku slammed over ‘insensitive’ remarks on MaKhumalo’s fertility struggles

by Zintle Mdaka

Reality TV star Musa Mseleku is facing renewed backlash after controversial comments about his wife Thobile Khumalo (widely known as MaKhumalo) sparked outrage among viewers of Uthando Nes’thembu.

As reported by IOL, the controversy stems from remarks made during recent and past episodes of the show, where Musa addressed the couple’s long-standing fertility struggles. According to reports, he previously stated that he was “tired of waiting” for MaKhumalo to conceive naturally—comments that struck a nerve with audiences.

Viewers also reacted strongly to earlier scenes in which Musa referred to MaKhumalo as a “failure,” a statement widely interpreted as being linked to her inability to have children. The remarks have since resurfaced in public discourse, fuelling criticism on social media, reported The South African.

The issue gained further traction after Musa offered a controversial explanation for their fertility challenges, suggesting that MaKhumalo’s difficulties could be tied to an “ancestral gift” she has not fully embraced.

According to the above publication, his claim, rooted in traditional beliefs, divided public opinion. While some supported the cultural perspective, many others labelled the comments inappropriate and insensitive.

MaKhumalo’s fertility journey has been a central storyline on Uthando Nes’thembu, with the couple openly discussing their struggles to conceive over several seasons. IOL reported that the topic has often been portrayed as emotionally charged, highlighting the strain it has placed on their relationship.

Despite the backlash, according to The South African, Musa has attempted to clarify his remarks, stating that he did not intend to insult his wife and that he has accepted their situation. He emphasised that his earlier comments were not meant to directly reference her fertility challenges.

However, public reaction remains divided. Many viewers have rallied behind MaKhumalo, calling for greater empathy when discussing infertility—particularly on a public platform—while others argue that the couple’s openness reflects the reality of their relationship dynamics.

The controversy has once again sparked broader conversations about how sensitive personal issues are handled in reality television, and the impact such discussions can have when broadcast to a national audience.
