The Makhanda born multi-talented media personality Unathi Nkayi is someone who never shy’s away from declaring her identity and roots on any public platform. Many could even brag and say Unathi is one public figures who carries her identity and roots with extreme pride and joy.
Those who are big fans of her music would be familiar with how aligned with culture Unathi is. She has dedicated years in the music industry not only entertain the audience but also asa trailblazer to her people.
Her music and profound lyrics that she often pens down have become a universal language that is understood and is embraced by African people across many nations.
To support the above statement, this past festive season Unathi served us all the content we had wanted and more. From the moment she embraced the zibazana title, right up until she became ‘umama ka singaye.’
Taking to Instagram to share how deeply rooted she is in her culture. She dedicated a post calling her clan names that form her ancestral lineage.
She began calling upon, “Nkayi, Thuthumela, Moyikwa, Nyukwana, Pepepe, Walo, Homposhe, Njifile, Tshungwana, Ndikwe, Zoyi.”
Unathi further recited the rest of her clan names, “Qabeleweni, Umthi ome phezukomfula ongadliwa nayibxozana, Mngane omncane ongadliwa nazinyosi, Bisi lwenkomo oluvalelwa umntwana ukude le kulonina, Nkomo zikanyokana, Sigqa, Gavhu.”
Following the reciting of her clan names she said, “I love being Xhosa. I love being a descendant of the Khoi San. I love being isizukulo sama gqirha.”
