South African hip-hop artist Flvme is making waves with his sophomore album, Blvck and White, which has already amassed over 2 million streams across digital platforms in just its first month.
For Flvme, whose real name is Lesego Kyle Mnyandu, the album is more than music—it’s a personal diary set to rhythm and melody. The project, which took around eight months to complete, has been praised as one of the strongest South African hip-hop releases of 2025.

A Raw and Personal Creative Journey
Speaking to IOL, Flvme described his creative process as instinctive rather than planned. “I never overthink how a song should sound. I just let my feelings guide the music,” he said. This approach led to spontaneous choices, such as incorporating choir voices, which he describes as the “1% that felt was missing” from the album.
Blvck and White spans 20 tracks, initially 22, but two were removed to respect sample rights and keep the runtime cohesive. The album blends hip-hop with RnB, reflecting both his upbringing in a musically gifted family and his desire to push beyond conventional rap boundaries.
“Hip-hop allows me to merge styles,” Flvme explained. “This album is hip-hop, but certain sonic moments lean into RnB. I’ve never seen myself as just a rapper; my music is alternative.”

Songs as Therapy and Storytelling
Each track on Blvck and White is deeply personal, with Flvme treating music as both therapy and escape. He describes his albums as chapters of his diary, a medium for expressing feelings he might struggle to voice in conversation.
His favorite track, “Daddy Issues,” addresses complex personal themes, offering social commentary while remaining introspective. Many of the songs were self-produced, showcasing his prolific beat-making and giving him full creative control.
“I make way more beats than songs,” Flvme said. “It allows me to develop ideas as I go, without relying on anyone else.”
Symbolism and Rebirth
The album cover is a striking black-and-white image of Flvme emerging from water, symbolizing tears, pain, and fear, but also rebirth and transformation. “It’s a reintroduction of myself,” he said. “I’m not the same person I was a few years ago.”
Flvme is planning an intimate tour to perform the album, aiming to create a meaningful connection with his audience, far beyond standard concerts.
Independent Success and Impact
Blvck and White is an independent release, a collaboration between his label, New Regime Sound, and The Valhalla for distribution. Despite a limited focus on playlisting, the album’s rapid growth underscores Flvme’s reach and resonance with listeners.
When asked why people should listen, he emphasized personal growth. “This album can help with character development, thinking, and reactions to life situations. It can ultimately improve the quality of your lifestyle,” he explained.
