This August, Mzansi Magic Bioskop is shining a spotlight on homegrown storytelling with the premiere of Nthabiseng, a heartfelt movie that explores grief, healing and the emotional strength that many women carry.

A moving Women’s Day premiere
The show premieres on Sunday, 9 August at 8pm to mark Women’s Day. It follows the story of Nthabiseng, played by Didi Makobane, known for her character on Cobrizi, a young woman who takes on a job in the home of a grieving family.
She joins the household of widower Zamani, portrayed by Sparky Xulu, popular for appearing on Kwa Baba and Law, Love & Betrayal, and his daughter Mbali, played by Paballo Landu, who are struggling to come to terms with the loss of their wife and mother.
The cast also features veteran actress Mme Lillian Dube as Mme Moholo, the family’s traditional matriarch who upholds structure and discipline within the home. There are also several other familiar faces, including Kamo Modisakeng as Tessa and Dumisani Dlamini as The Taxi Driver.
A story of grief, healing and hope
Following the devastating loss of his wife, Zamani is left to navigate the challenges of single parenthood. Despite his best efforts, an emotional distance begins to grow between him and Mbali.
Everything changes when Nthabiseng enters their lives. Through her patience, kindness and unwavering compassion, she becomes a source of comfort for Mbali and a quiet pillar of support for Zamani. As the family slowly begins to heal, an unexpected bond starts to blossom.

Produced by Calltime Studios, Nthabiseng arrives during Women’s Month, celebrating the emotional resilience, compassion and quiet strength that women often bring to families and communities.
The film highlights the often-unrecognised role women play in helping others heal while holding families together through life’s most difficult moments.
Producer shares the vision behind the film
According to producer Tebogo Tebxa Mabaso, the team set out to create a story that feels authentic and proudly South African.
“We wanted audiences to recognise themselves in these characters, their struggles and their triumphs. Nthabiseng is ultimately a celebration of resilience, family and the quiet acts of kindness that have the power to change lives, and we are proud to bring this story to audiences and hope it sparks conversations about love, healing and the value of human connection,” says Tebogo.
