Ramaphosa appoints Puleng Dimpane as acting police commissioner amid SAPS crisis

by Zintle Mdaka

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane as South Africa’s new acting National Police Commissioner, marking a dramatic leadership shift within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Times LIVE reported that the announcement comes shortly after Cyril confirmed the immediate suspension of National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, pending the outcome of a formal process.

Speaking during a media briefing at the Union Buildings, Cyril said the decision forms part of urgent measures to stabilise SAPS following mounting concerns over leadership and internal tensions.

Puleng, who has been serving as SAPS Chief Financial Officer, brings years of experience in financial management and internal systems within the police service. Her appointment is seen as a move to restore administrative control and reinforce accountability at the highest level of policing.

The President emphasised that the changes were necessary to protect the integrity of law enforcement institutions and to ensure that SAPS remains capable of carrying out its constitutional mandate.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia joined the announcement, signalling a coordinated effort within government to address the crisis. Authorities have indicated that further interventions may follow as part of a broader plan to rebuild trust in the police service.

Puleng’s appointment also marks a significant moment for representation within SAPS leadership, as she steps into one of the most critical roles in the country’s security structure during a period of heightened scrutiny.

As the situation develops, attention will now turn to how the new acting commissioner navigates the challenges facing SAPS, including internal stability, public confidence and ongoing investigations linked to the leadership shake-up.
