by Kwanele Mathebula
Back of the Moon

S’dumo Mtshali, Richard Lukunku, and Moneoa are starring in a new local film titled Back of the Moon. Set in 1958 Sophiatown, the movie tells the story of a famous musician who falls for a gang leader the night before leaving the country for a world tour with a theatre production. It is also the same night before blacks were forcibly removed from Sophiatown.

Back of the Moon also stars Thomas Gumede, Lemogang Tsipa, Israel Matseke-Zulu and Siyabonga Thwala.

Back of the Moon will premiere at the 2019 Durban International Film Festival before hitting the local big screens.

The film I co-produced with @zwabheka directed by @angus__gibson with @bomb_productions will be premiering at @durbaninternationalfilmfest next month. Set in 1958 Sophiatown, its a love story between a famous musician who falls in love with a gang leader the night before she leaves South Africa to perform on a world tour with a theatre production and the same night before blacks were forcibly removed from Sophiatown. It’s fun, it’s wild it’s full of music and it puts in colour a particular part of South Africa that doesn’t fully deal with apartheid but a celebration of black excellence at the time.
