The family of South African musician Tebogo G Mashego has issued a heartfelt statement in response to recent reports and social media discussions about his mental health. Known for his hit “Biri Marung,” Mashego has been in the spotlight following a distressing series of events that sparked public concern.

“We would be remiss if we did not start by thanking the public of South Africa, especially Tebogo’s fans, for the outpouring of support over the past week. Your concerns and messages of love have not gone unnoticed,” the family wrote.

They emphasised the need for privacy, asking the media and the public to allow them space to process recent events. “We respectfully request time and privacy to process and come to terms with the recent incident involving our child,” the statement said.

Calls for Compassion and Understanding

The family also appealed for prayers for Mashego and confirmed that no further statements would be issued at this stage. They cautioned against sharing unauthoritative information. “Any updates will be formally communicated by the family at the appropriate time. We wish to emphasise that any information not released directly by us should be regarded as unauthoritative,” they said.

In addition, the statement restricted visits to Mashego. “Furthermore, we request that no media, friends, or colleagues attempt to visit Tebogo. Access will be limited to immediate family members only,” they added.

The statement follows Mashego’s return to South Africa after being stranded in Nigeria on September 19. Reports indicate he missed his Ethiopian Airlines flight, prompting frustration and distress that were widely shared online.

A video circulated showing a tearful Mashego expressing regret over the trip and calling out those who had encouraged him to travel for a singing engagement. In several clips, he voiced grievances about being mistreated by his team and not receiving payments owed for completed performances. He even appealed to fans for donations to cover travel costs, describing himself as abandoned by his team.

Confusion escalated after popular blogger Musa Khawula shared a video on X claiming Mashego had been arrested for slander and defamation of character. Fans expressed alarm, fearing the situation had taken a legal turn.

However, Crime Watch SA clarified the facts, explaining that no arrest had taken place. “Tebogo G Mashego has not been arrested. Information received indicates that he displayed abnormal behaviour and allegedly acted violently, assaulting people without apparent cause,” the statement said.

Police intervention was reportedly required to ensure public safety, with Laudium SAPS members removing Mashego from the community after he resisted authorities.
