#MyNameIsnt takes a powerful stand against public harassment

Award-winning director Spike Lee’s series adaptation of his classic 1986 film She’s Gotta Have It on Netflix inspired the #MyNameIsnt Campaign on social media. The 10-part-series follows the story of a woman in her late 20’s struggling to balance her friendships, work and three boyfriends.

On the first episode of the show, the main character, Nola is assaulted by a guy whose advances she rejects twice while walking home by herself in the middle of the night. The guy proceeds to grab her by the wrist and call her names.

After the incident, Nola begins a #MyNameIsnt campaign to fight public harassment against women. Netflix has taken it a step further by starting the #MyNameIsnt campaign on social media. The service created a meme generator where women can add their pictures and create a meme to join the campaign.

Here’s a clip of #MyNameIsnt campaign.

Nola is quite complex, but all-in-all I’m very proud to play a human being standing up for herself, her work, mind, body, & soul. I’m so moved by your messages, and today #Netflix invites you to create & share your own “My name isn’t” manifesto too. Link in bio. ??✊? #MyNameIsnt #StopTellingWomenToSmile
