Hair Lingo

It’s important to know what your hair needs to stay shiny and healthy. Here is a glossary to help understand hair terminology.

A

Amino Acids. These are usually found in shampoo and leave-in conditioners. They are building blocks of protein that make-up keratin and penetrate deep into the hair shaft to strengthen and repair it.

Beeswax. This natural wax made from honey is usually found in scented oils or ointments mixed with creams. It helps protect the hair from losing moisture and is usually used on dreadlocks.

Detangler. A detangling product is used to minimise frizz and friction and untangle hair.

Humectant. This attracts and absorbs moisture. It is a common ingredient in shampoos and conditioners.

Jojoba Oil. This oil is extracted from seeds of the jojoba plant. It adds shine to your hair and helps with scalp issues like dandruff and eczema.

Neutraliser. This is a special shampoo that stops chemicals from breaking down your hair bonds after using a relaxer. If not used, you could have a burnt scalp and experience hair loss.

No-lye. A no-lye relaxer is mild, with a lower pH than lye. It’s gentler on the scalp and can be used at home or in a salon. Most no-lye relaxers include activators (you mix a liquid into the cream) before applying.

Organic. An organi product must include at least 95% organically produced ingredients. Organic means the products are safe for the environment and don’t have harsh chemicals.
