Zahara on her new album

by Kwanele Mathebula

Multi-award winning singer-songwriter Zahara tells us about her third album, Mgodi, which has already reached gold status.

1. The title means a hole, and it was inspired by my life experiences. I went through a lot and felt chased down. Because of this, I found myself looking for a place to hide. I believe I ended up in a hole, which I struggled to get out of it. I then found strength in my musical gift, and that’s how the album came to be.

2. I am still the village girl with a story to tell. The album talks about my growth as a young woman and the journey I’ve travelled, thus far. It encapsulates where I came from, where I am right now and where I hope to be in the future. My favourite track is Win or Lose because references my fighting spirit.

3. I collaborated with legendary American smooth jazz saxophonist and songwriter Kirk Whalum on two songs, Umfazi and Ina Mvula. This came about following our meeting during his South African tour. I also collaborated with Sivuyele – the first artist under my record label Music Lives Here Records – on the song Tribute. Mjakes Thebe, who worked on my first two albums, also produced Mgodi.

4. My album reaching gold status on the day of release fills me with delight. I am happy and grateful that people wanted to hear my story!.
