6 advantages of distance learning

by Bona staff

Are you wasting your time in a dead-end job? Life is too short to be stuck in a career you don’t love. We spoke to Barend van den Berg, MD of distance learning college Oxbridge Academy, about how part-time studying at home can help you land your dream job.

Here are six reasons why distance learning might be the answer for you:

1.    Earn while you learn

Studying via distance learning gives you the opportunity to upskill yourself for the job you really want without having to leave your current job. You can study at night and over weekends and support yourself at the same time, without losing your independence.

2.    You can study in the comfort of your home

When you study through correspondence, your studies come to you. There are no long lectures at awkward times or distractions; just you and your books.

3.    It looks good on your CV

Prospective employers will be impressed by a candidate who has demonstrated initiative by developing their knowledge and skills on their own steam. It will also show that you’re good with time management as you’re able to successfully juggle work and studying.

4.    It’s flexible

You can manage your time by choosing when to study the coursework and for how long, giving you the freedom to live your life as you’d like to.

5.    Saves time and money

Distance learning eliminates travel time and transportation costs, leaving you with more time to study and more money to save. Plus, correspondence courses are usually cheaper than studying at a college or university.

6.    Study what you’re interested in

Beauty therapy, computer courses, tourism courses – you can be who you want to be by choosing from a large array of study options.

Long distance learning tips

Here are some helpful tips from Oxbridge Academy on how to make the most of your long distance learning experience:

  • Connect with other students doing the same course by creating a WhatsApp group to share ideas and help each other.
  • Make the most of any tutor meet-ups or online forums that your distance learning college offers.
  • If you think you’d find it too tempting to watch TV at home, find a quiet space where you can study without being disturbed, like a public library (look for one with free Wi-Fi).
  • Break down the coursework into manageable sessions so you don’t get overwhelmed.
  • Stay motivated by rewarding yourself for hitting small milestones such as passing an exam or handing in a research paper.
