Proudly African

Today, 25 May, marks Africa Day and because a lot of negative things happen on our beautiful continent daily, we often forget to be grateful and proud to be Africans. Here are five reasons to be proudly African:

Human Life

Human life originates in Africa. Although it is still vague where and how human life really began, the fact that the first human skull was discovered on our soil safely points to Africa as the mother of all life. Should be the reason the continent is referred to as the Motherland!

Nelson Mandela

South Africa gave the world Nelson Mandela. It is fair to say that the late former president was and still remains the world’s most celebrated and loved politician. His entire life was dedicated to serving his people and that is just one of the reasons that the United Nations declared 8 July Nelson Mandela International Day.

Our Wildlife

When people all over the world want to see the big five, the first place that comes to mind is Africa. We don’t only have the big five, but also animals unique to the African continent, such as the giraffe, zebra, gorilla, hippopotamus, chimpanzee and wildebeest.

Our food

From Malva pudding (which talk show host Oprah Winfrey couldn’t stop raving about) to biltong, pounded yam and egusi and Injera bread, Africans own the kitchen and have been making headlines for kitchen skills.

Our People

We have the kindest, most colourful and warmest people on our shores. Africa is also well known for the hospitable people who produce original music, inspire fashion trends, give the world poetry and fabulous hairstyle trends.
