Catching Up With Simphiwe Ngema

by Amanda Ndlangisa

Muvhango Actress Simphiwe Ngema took the industry by storm when she joined Muvhango as Thuli. After audition 17 times for the role, she tells us how it feels to be living her dream.

Simphiwe Ngema

Your favourite TV show is…

I love Muvhango, the story lines are amazing and we all have a great relationship as the cast which is more family than colleagues.

How did you join the soapie?

I wanted to join Muvhango so bad that I auditioned 17 times. I started auditioning between 2008 and 2009, at first I auditioned for Pearl’s role (the receptionist), then it was Vuyiswa (Phila’s sugar mommy) then Juby (James girlfriend) They never said there was anything wrong with me, they were just figuring out which roles they wanted to create that would be suitable for me. Then finally they Created Thuli which they felt was suitable for me. I wanted it so bad and giving up was not an option for me. It was a long process but it was worth it.

What kind of challenges do you go through on-screen?

You always have to look good and do every scene as best as you can, that is my every day challenge and I still get nervous before I shoot.

What made you go into acting?

I studied Journalism at Boston Media House but always wanted to act, I’ve always loved performing in general, and I used to perform at school concerts and at church. Journalism is my passion but I want to focus more on my acting career for now.

Three things aspiring actors should know?

  • Always respect your career and colleagues because tomorrow might bring something good or bad.
  • Study and get as much information as you can and be open minded.
  • Understand that it’s not easy and you need to know exactly what you getting yourself into, be educated and get an agent.

Catch Muvhango on SABC2 weekdays at 9pm.
