Man Crush Monday – Andile Gumbi

He is known to many as Zweli Ntshangase, the Casanova from Isibaya. But to his friends and family, he is Andile Gumbi – an ordinary laid-back lad.

The ladies love your Isibaya character Zweli, are you anything like him? Tell us about what sets the two apart.

Zweli is a womaniser and comes from a well off family. I am not like him in – I had to work hard to get to where I am and don’t come from a family like his. However, we do have similar characteristics as we both love to enjoy life.

Your stardom into the acting world did not begin on Isibaya. Please tell us about your acting journey including your time in theatre.

In 2004 I was cast to be in the Australian theatre production of The Lion King. I then continued with the productions for a couple of years, travelling to different countries. My television experience came up in 2013 when I got the opportunity to join season two of Isibaya. Theatre is my first love, but acting on screen is something I have always wanted to do.

Is acting your only profession? If not, please tell us about any other projects, and jobs you may have.

I am still finding my feet in the South African industry, so at the moment that is my focus. I would like to get into music and use my vocal talents, but right now I just want to expand in the acting industry.

What do you get up to in your spare time?

I love spending time with family and friends, going out to movies, the gym and travelling.

Do you have a special woman in your life?

No, I don’t.

How would you describe your ideal girlfriend?

She must be a good person with good qualities, and, above all, someone deeply cultured.

What would be your ideal date?

I do not have a specific ideal date as I am a spontaneous guy. So it all depends on how I feel on the day.

How do you keep fit?

It is often hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle because of the long hours I work. But I try to go to the gym as often as possible. I love food and can’t see myself cutting out of it. I do, however, eat moderately but do not follow any particular diet.

Any tips for others who are inspired by your healthy living?

Do not eat too much, but rather try eating moderately. Have all the important meals of the day (your breakfast, lunch and supper with a snack in-between). Lastly, make exercising your friend and do it as much as possible.
