RTI records thousands of traffic enforcement actions

During this period, the teams recorded the following enforcement results:
- 421 speeding charges issued.
- 12,073 vehicles stopped.
- 1,719 motorists charged with various offences.
- 87 motorists charged with driving without driver’s licences.
- 141 motorists charged with failing to wear seatbelts.
- 112 unlicensed vehicles identified.
- 140 vehicles impounded for operating without the required permits.
The figures demonstrate the scale of enforcement activity as authorities work to improve compliance with road traffic laws and reduce dangerous driving.
More road safety operations planned
According to the MEC’s statement, more than 26 #NenzaniLaEzweni multidisciplinary operations were planned for the period between 22 and 28 October 2026.
An additional 15 operations were also planned, specifically targeting drunk driving.
The intensified enforcement comes ahead of the festive season, when increased traffic volumes often place additional pressure on South African roads.
The MEC warned that the RTI would show no mercy to motorists who violate traffic laws during the festive season, pointing to the enforcement action already undertaken during Transport Month.
Motorists warned against dangerous driving
The case involving Asavela highlights the ongoing efforts by traffic authorities to address excessive speeding.
Driving at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone means travelling 78km/h above the speed limit, increasing the risk of serious collisions and endangering other road users.
Authorities continue to urge motorists to obey posted speed limits, wear seatbelts, ensure their vehicles are properly licensed and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
Asavela is expected to reappear at the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court on 28 October 2026. The matter remains subject to the court process.
